Academic Writing & Language Style 畢業論文大學功課學術寫作風格 (Thesis, Dissertation, FYP, Assignment, Essay, Coursework 畢業論文大學功課內)

大家好! 又是 DCWAHK (www.dcwahk.com) 香港論文指輔導顧問中心的 blog post. 上次我們連續 2 個文章討論了 critical thinking 在 essay, assignment, coursework, thesis, dissertation, 或 final year project 的重要性. 今次我們討論一點 文字上的應用 “Academic writing and language style”. 

  

Academic Writing and Language Style?

Academic writing, 不論在 essay, assignment, coursework, thesis, dissertation, 或 final year project, 都是要 簡單 直接 正式 (plain, formal, and direct). 簡單一點, 它跟 formal business writing 是大同小異, 你要簡單直接正式的表達. 賣弄 flowery 文字或句子;  沒有內容的去空談; 用 idioms, phrasal verbs, informal words, colloquial 和 slang 都會失分 (除非那一個是 cultural 或 linguistic 研究, 你需要用到這些去表達某些現像).

 

例子 1: 我們要表達 工時長 “工資低 令人不開心和有厭力”

我們可以這樣寫 - Long work hours and low wages have induced stress and discontent in some people. 這樣簡單直接又正式. 你可以用同義詞 salaries, unhappiness 和 caused 代替 wages, discontent 和 induced, 這些同義都可以. 

 

不要用 Informal Wording

但如果 你寫 People, getting stranded at work, sell their souls to corporations in return for tiny money is a real bummer. They are stressed out and grumpy about it. 有 colloquial, flowery and informal words, 很地道很生動的表達方式吧.. 對不起, 這不是 academic writing 而且用了太多字 (除非那一個是 cultural 或 linguistic 研究, 你需要用到這些去表達某些現像).

 

例子 2:  “ABC 公司管理層需要考慮實施一個員工安全方案”

我們可以這樣寫 – Senior management at ABC needs to consider implementing an employee safety program. 注意:英式的 management 和 company 可以是 plural  或 singular noun . 但港式, 亞洲式或美式是 singular noun. 

 

Academic Writing 不是展現你有多認識 Phrasal Verbs/ Idioms

 但如果 你寫 Higher-ups at the helm of ABC gotta figure out an employee safety program. 有 phrasal verb 又有 idiom, 很地道的表達方式吧. 對不起, 這不是 academic writing (除非那一個是 cultural 或 linguistic 研究, 你需要用到這些去表達某些現像).

 

例子 3: “酗酒有害身體”. 

我們可以這樣寫 Binge drinking is hazardous to health. 你可以用同義詞 alcohol abuse 和 harmful 代替 binge drinking 和 hazardous.  

 

Academic Writing 不是展現你有多認識 Slang

 但如果 你寫 Boozing is gonna waste you. 有 colloquial and informal words, 很地道很生動的表達方式吧.. 對不起, 這又不是 academic writing (除非那一個是 cultural 或 linguistic 研究, 你需要用到這些去表達某些現像).

 

香港的同學要留意:

Academic writing 在 essay, assignment, coursework, thesis, dissertation, 或 final year project 裡, 不是炫耀英文多生日化或多生動 (除非那一個是 cultural 或 linguistic 研究, 你需要用到這些去表達某些現像). 另外,  建立同義詞庫需要多看多運用. 如果沒太多同義詞, 不緊要, 用最簡單直接正式的表達就可以.

Report writing 格式是相對比較容易處理,  香港 學生可以將內容放在不同 Headings Subheadings 內.   一般 Assignment 格式如下: 1) Introduction 1.1) Background 1.2) Rationale For The Work 1.3) Report Aim 2) Literature Review 2.1) Theoretical Justification & Discussion 2.2) Empirical Comparison 3) Analysis & Discussion 4) Conclusion & Recommendations   Essay 在香港 多數情況下是不會有任何 Headings & Subheadings 相反, essay writing, 作為 assignment 或 大學功課的一種,  在香港 是比較特別, 有時是不會有任何 headings subheadings 在內, 所以香港 學生需要一口氣一篇過在 essay 內用不同段落 邏輯地表達所有內容. 這 一口氣一篇過寫 essay 是 非常考驗學生 邏輯 和使用不同的 language anchors/connectors (例如: Akin to. 如何運用 Critical Thinking & Writing 畢業論文大學功課批判性思維和寫作? (Thesis, Dissertation, FYP, Assignment, Essay, Coursework)

  大家好 ! 這是 DCWAHK (www.dcwahk.com) 香港論文指輔導顧問中心的 第 4 個 blog post. 上次在 討論完 intext citations, referencing, 及 paraphrasing . 今次 跟大家 跟進 下 如何在 academic writing  內 運用 critical thinking.   為何要 Critical Thinking & Writing? 或者你有試過被 marker 說過你的 academic writing 內容有 descriptive writing. Descriptive writing 其實是你在簡單地敘述一些事情, 例如敘述式報告發生什麼事, 或敘述式説明一些已知事情例如某理論. 在 essay, assignment, coursework, thesis, dissertation, 或 FYP, 我們在寫作上終究會有一定小數量的 descriptive writing, 這是不能完全避免因為我們要說明或敘述某些理論或已發生的事, 例如交代一點背景或敘述一些相關理論的運作.    Descriptive Writing 不會是 Academic Writing 的全部 但如果整篇 academic writing 大部分或全部是 descriptive writing, 基本上是拿不到好成績或甚至不合格.    要減少  descriptive writing, 我們要注重 critical thinking and writing  , 從而給 marker 知道 你的內容是經過一系列不同討論才達到結論.
